HERITAGE LAB is an educational project organized by CHwB Kosovo aiming to create new opportunities for students of architecture, cultural heritage and other related fields to learn about methods of documentation, preservation, revival and interpretation of cultural heritage through “hands on” practical work and complementary lectures. HERITAGE LAB is an activity developed “in situ”, so that the problems of a heritage site are surveyed directly and the solutions for its treatment, interpretation and management are given at the same time.
In partnership with UNDP, from 4th to 15th of October 2021, CHwB Kosovo is organizing the Restoration Camp in the Clock Tower of Prishtinë/Priština, whereby 20 students will be able to build their knowledge on traditional materials and techniques for the preservation of historic structures. Throughout lectures conducted by international and national renowned professors and experts as well as practical work coordinated by experienced craftsmen, they will be part of the preservation of cultural heritage by implementing the methods and techniques learned throughout the workshop.
This workshop is part of the project "Cultural Heritage as a Driver for Intercommunity Dialogue and Social Cohesion" implemented by UNDP and funded by the European Union’s Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace (IcSP).
Located in the old core of the city of Prishtinë/Priština, the Clock Tower represents an architecture of the Ottoman period and is one of the few buildings of that typology that has resisted time. This monument built at the end of the 20th century, like other representing buildings of this period, depicts added artistic values through the application of geometric shapes and floral motifs and the special construction of arches and spiral staircase.
The old bell, which was taken by Turks as war booty during their wars in Moldova and Vlachia and brought to the Clock Tower in Vushtrri/Vučitrn, was located in this building. According to the order of Jashar Pasha, the bell was taken from Vushtrri/Vučitrn to Prishtinë/Priština. On the surface of the bell, there was a Romanian inscription from 1764 of Duke Jan Moldovan, which when translated reads: "This Bell was made for Duke Jan Moldovan in 1764", with 2 cm long letters, extending around the bell, and which was decorated with a large number of ornaments similar to beech leaves.
The Clock Tower in Prishtinë/Priština, as a reference point, once dominated the silhouette of the old town with its height. At the same time, it was a secular object, under the service of sacred buildings, as its bell informed the believers of the schedule of performance of Islamic religious rites.
