Heritage after War – The Hadum Mosque Restoration

Works done in Hadum Mosque under the management of CHwB, 2003 – 2005 During the first six months of the CHwB’s engagement, work focussed on finding and engaging the best possible experts and craftsmen. Parallel to this activity, an analysis was carried out of the existing building materials and a search was initiated for possible new materials to use. In the two summer periods of 2004 and 2005 the following works were carried out: – Restoration of the minaret including reconstruction of the destroyed upper shaft. – Stone conservation of the portico columns, facades, lower part of the minaret and window and doorframe stones, including removing all the cement pointing and reparations, consolidation of the eroded stones and replacement of damaged stones. – Change of the lead covering on the Praying Hall cupola. – Restoration of the Portico including the columns, the stone cornice, the floor tiles, the badly burnt entrance door and the production of an entrance curtain. – Decreasing of the moisture in the foundation and the walls by lowering the ground closest to the mosque, cleaning and repairing the foundation, adding a hydro isolation and by taking care of the rainwater on the surface closest to the building. – Cleaning and restoration of the yard, including cleaning the gravestones and reparation of the walls around the yard. A part from the above-mentioned works, a number of other smaller works have been carried out.
