In written sources, of which the earliest dates back to AD 1319, the site name Nouvomonte which means “New Mountain” is preserved in several languges and variations such as: Novus Mons (Latin), Nouva Monte, Nouvomonte Argentina (Italian), Novo Brdo (Slavic), Novaberd, Nobirda (Ottoman), Neuberg and Nyenberghe (German). Today the site is best known by the name Noveberda, or Artana which means the “Golden Place” in Albanian.
